Public Forum on Organ Donation in the afternoon of 5th September 2013 from 3.30 PM to 5 PM in Bhargava Auditorium.
Description
INVITATION A huge gap exists between patients who need organ transplants and potential donors. It's not that there aren't enough organs to transplant. Nearly every person who dies naturally, or in an accident, is a potential donor. Even so, innumerable patients cannot find a donor. India lags far behind other countries in this regard. Rough estimates indicate that anywhere between two and three million Indians may have died in the last couple of years because they could not get an organ transplant. One person can save the life of about 10 persons; hence a true "Gift of Life". Organ shortages are a global problem, but India lags behind much of the rest of the world. The organ donation rate from dead bodies in India is estimated to be a minuscule 0.05 per million people (although India has among the world's highest number of deaths from road accidents). Hong Kong's organ donation rate is less than 5 per million, while it's 25 per million in the United States. You will be pleased to know that PGIMER has also started the Heart Transplantation program in addition to Liver and Kidney Transplantation and many more such programs, such as, Pancreas and Intestinal Transplantation will be introduced shortly. In order to increase the Organ Donation in India in general and in North India in particular, the Department of Hepatology, PGIMER, Chandigarh is organising "Public Forum on Organ Donation" in the afternoon of 5th September 2013 from 3.30 PM to 5 PM in Bhargava Auditorium.
