Nivedita Creche PGIMER Campus, Sector-12, Chandigarh. As a part of its welfare function, PGI authorities aim to provide quality care to the children of its employees. Today the need for fulltime day care services is felt more than ever with increasing number of working parents and nuclear families .Therefore dedicated crèche services are provided by PGI in 14000 sqft area . ( Breakup of the covered area is 1500sqft, crèche is 675 sqft, Kitchen 60 sqft, Toilet 490 sqft ,Office 65sq ft .)
Historical perspective of the Nivedita Creche Creche was opened for the welfare of the children’s of nurses on 14.11.1980 by Dr.P.L Wahi DPGI at that time. Actually, it was started by ICCW on 15.08.1980 (Indian Council of Child Welfare- inaugurated by Mrs.Neki), but later closed because of administrative difficulties and reopened under Department of Nurses Services in the above date. It was started under one project with the objective of developing good mental health of the children of whose mother’s were working. Mannu was the first child registered in this crèche later the strength increased to 10 at the end of that month and 72 at 1st year. Mrs. Prem Mehra (CNS-Chief Nursing Superintendent) was the first project officer. The building for crèche was first allotted in Anatomy wing then shifted to nurses hostel wing. It is different from traditional crèche because it is a need based crèche. At that time 5 Sahaikas trained by PGI nurses and they worked 7 hours at a stretch in day time and 10½ hours in night. Age groups between 3 months to 3 years were admitted during that time. Then the age criteria changed from 3 years to 8 years in the upper side and again to till 10 years of age. It provides services from 8am to 8pm round the year. List of project officers and Chair person were given below.
