Achievments of PGIMER in year 2012

 

PGIMER is completing 50 years of its existence and is celebrating its Golden Jubilee Year. In this journey of 50 years PGI has made significant contribution in the field of medical education, research and quality patient care. The institute has not only achieved leadership in many areas but also has established itself as the best service provider, an achievement recently highlighted in a national weekly where we are placed second. In 2012 PGIMER climbed the following steps:

 Milestones

 

  • First paediatric stem cell transplant - Doctors at the Advanced Pediatrics Centre of PGI, Chandigarh have successfully performed a stem cell transplant of a three year old boy with cancer. The little boy was suffering from a rare cancer, called Neuroblastoma which had spread all over his body.

 

  • Nucleic acid testing (NAT) Lab - Nucleic acid testing (NAT) Lab in the Department of Transfusion Medicine at PGI was inaugurated.   NAT is the most sensitive and state-of-the-art testing for improving blood safety from transfusion transmissible viral infections-HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.  It detects the presence of DNA or RNA of the virus. This is the first NAT facility for blood screening in the region.

 

  • HIV Testing and Disease Monitoring laboratory in the Department of Immunopathology, PGIMER has been accorded Accreditation by the National Accreditation Board for Calibration and Testing Laboratories (NABL).  

 

  • Neuroscience Research Lab under the Department of Neurology introduced novel MPLA based genetic testing. The 27 new genetic tests introduced cost half the price of private labs and include genetic testing for Huntington's Chorea, Muscular Dystrophy, Ataxias, Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's disease, Mirgaine, Retinitis pigmentosa, AMD etc.

 

  • The Foundation Stone of Image Guided Radiation Therapy (I.G.R.T.) Complex was laid. This complex will house a High Energy Linear Accelerator and a CT Simulator along with other accessories.  The High Energy Linear Accelerator to be installed in the Department of Radiotherapy, will have facilities for doing all the latest techniques of radiation for treatment of different cancers.

 

  • Department of Pulmonary Medicine, a WHO Collaborating Centre for research and capacity building in Chronic Respiratory Diseases, was redesignated by the World Health Organization for another four years.  Its 'terms of reference' have been further expanded to include the strengthening of capacity in South East Asia Region member countries of the WHO.  The two large studies (one each in chronic lung disease and tuberculosis) steered by the department at multiple centres in India, were published in International Journals.

 

  • Department of Cytology and Gynaecological Pathology has acquired the state-of-the-art facility of Liquid Based Cytology (LBC). This system has been applied in all types of gynaecological and non-gynaecological cytology samples for patient care increasing the sensitivity of the diagnosis.

 

  • Department of Endocrinology made a substantial progress in the stem cell research in patients with type 2 diabetes and 70% of the patients had significant benefit.

          New hormonal estimation facilities with state of art technology were installed providing the qualitative and rapid services to

          the  patients.

  • Molecular endocrinology lab and facilities for Clamp studies were started in April 2012 to enhance the research in the field of Endocrinology.

  • Department of Nuclear Medicine started a separate nuclear Cardiology facility for cardiac patients in the Advanced Cardiac Centre

          Two new state of the art gamma cameras in the main department were introduced.

          The department also started radio-peptide therapy for neuro-endocrine tumors.

 

  • Department of Otolaryngology has been sanctioned a DBT project for studying the biomarkers in HPV related Head & Neck Cancer in March 2012.  

The Department preformed 20 cochlear implants during the year 2012, providing hearing to profoundly deaf children.

 

  •  Department of Paediatric Medicine established ICMR centres for Evidence Based Child Health under Professor Meenu Singh and on Primary Immune Deficiency research under Prof Surjit Singh.

          A new clinic for Childhood Epilepsy was started.

 

  • Department of General Surgery developed the techniques of minimally invasive surgery by performing more number of complex advanced laparoscopic surgical procedures like-Bariatric surgery for morbid obese patients, laparoscopic splenectomy, laparoscopic  esophageal  and laparoscopic colonic surgery.  It continued to perform Cadaveric Liver transplants.

 

  • Department of Anaesthesia has introduced monthly Basic Life Support course which trains 10-15 participants in each session.

The Department has also got approval for starting DM Neuroanaesthesia Course from January 2013    onwards.

 

  • Department of Medical Microbiology 'WHO Collaborating Center for Reference and Research on Fungi of Medical Importance has been re-designated for four more years - 2012-2015.

'Line Probe Assay Laboratory for Mycobacterial Infections was commissioned.

Indian Council of Medical Research identified two National Lead Centers for 'Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Network' - 'Fungi' and 'Gram Negative Bacteria'.

A BSL-III laboratory for Mycobacteria is under construction.

 

  • School of Public Health introduced Post Graduate Diploma in Public Health Management and online Health Economics Course.

Haryana Government and PGIMER signed MoU to improve healthcare in four Blocks.

Infant Death Review Guidelines were developed. Counselling clinic was started in Sector 45 Polyclinic of Chandigarh.

  • Asha Jyoti' Women's Healthcare Outreach Mobile Programme was inaugurated. A mobile van equipped with a microdose digital mammography unit for breast evaluation, a DEXA scan for evaluation of bone density and a digital video colposcope for evaluation of the cervix was introduced. 'Asha Jyoti' is a population based screening programme of healthy women in the age group 45-60 years for detection of breast cancer, cervical cancer and osteoporosis. The aim of this programme is to detect any of these three diseases before the individual has any signs or symptoms.

 

  • Alumni Cell was established for the first time in the history of PGIMER.  About 600 alumni from all over the world and the country registered in this Cell. An Alumni Convention was held for the first time on the occasion of Golden Jubilee Celebrations.

 

  • The Journal of Post Graduate Medicine Education and Research (JPMER) formerly Bulletin PGI, the official journal of the Institute has recently taken a very good shape and become online.

 

  • CCTV Cameras - PGIMER has installed 37 cameras covering all the outer gates with Pan Tilt Zoom (PTZ) camera facility as well as each and every entry and exit of every building of the Institute related to patient care with fixed Dome Cameras. Waiting halls and the public counters have also been covered with these CCTV Cameras.

 

Organ & Body donation

  • Twenty-three bodies were donated for research purposes in Department of Anatomy.
  • Three hundred and thirty-two eyes were donated in the Department of Ophthalmology. 
  • Eleven kidneys of six cadavers were transplanted to eleven patients in the Department of Renal Transplant Surgery.
  • The Department of Hepatology in collaboration with the surgical team has successfully done three deceased donor liver transplants.
