Oral Health Sciences Centre

 

 INTRODUCTION

The Department of Dentistry was established as a patient care service area in 1963 with one dental chair & unit and slowly developed into a full fledged department and got located initially in the space where at present the PGI emergency waiting area exists. The postgraduate teaching program leading to Master of Dental Sciences (Pedodontics & Preventive Dentistry) was started in the year 1976 with intake of three residents as a Panjab University, Chandigarh research scholar scheme without residency program. The residency program got initiated in the year 1981. The second postgraduate training program, MDS (Orthodontics) was started in the year 1989 with initial intake of two residents and thereafter increased to three. In 1983-84, the department was planned to be built with an independent building in the form of ‘Oral Health Sciences Centre’ where it got finally shifted and was inaugurated by the then Hon'ble Union Finance Minister, Govt. of India, Dr Manmohan Singh on 26th February, 1995. The third postgraduate training program, MDS (Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery) got started in the year 2011, with initial intake of two residents. 

Presently, the Oral Health Sciences Centre is providing comprehensive dental care related to the specialties of Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics, Endodontics and Community Dentistry. The thrust areas of clinical patient care in particular are:

-    Cleft and Craniofacial Orthodontics
-    Pediatric Orthodontics
-    Dentofacial Orthopedics
-    Pedodontics & Preventive Dentistry
-    Management of Children with special needs
-    Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
-    Oral and Maxillofacial Fracture
-    Prosthodontic Rehabilitation
-    Dental Implants
-    Orthognathic Surgery
-    Management of High Caries Risk children
-    Management of Oral Mucosal Lesion and MPDS

Dr (Mrs) Amrit Tewari from the speciality of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry had joined the Department of Dentistry, PGIMER, Chandigarh as Registrar in January 1964. She had become the Head of Department on February 1972 and Professor in November 1980. She also served as Dean, PGIMER from March 8, 1997 to Sept 30, 1998. She superannuated as Professor & Head, Oral Health Sciences Centre cum Dean, PGIMER, Chandigarh on September 30, 1998. She passed away on January 14, 2018.

Dr HS Chawla from the speciality of Pedodontics & Preventive Dentistry had joined the Department of Dentistry, PGIMER, Chandigarh as Registrar on July 9, 1970 and became the Professor on December 1, 1999. He became the Head of Oral Health Sciences Centre on October 1, 1998 and superannuated as Professor & Head on March 31, 2008.

Dr Ashok Utreja  from the speciality of Orthodontics, joined the Department of Dentistry, PGIMER, Chandigah as Senior Resident on July 5, 1974 and became Professor on July 1, 2000. He became the Head of Oral Health Sciences Centre on April 1, 2008 and  superannuated as Professor & Head on May 31, 2014.

Dr Sachin Kumar Rai from the speciality of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, did his MDS from King George's Medical University, Lucknow, joined as Senior Resident, Oral Health Sciences Centre, PGIMER, Chandigarh and promoted as Professor on October, 2021. He expired due to illness on 3.12.2021 at the age of 45 years.

Dr Krishan Gauba joined as Junior Resident at Deptt of Dentistry, PGIMER on July 1, 1980 in the speciality of Pedodontics & Preventive Dentistry. He was promoted as Professor on July 1, 2003 and became Head of Department on June 1, 2014. He joined as Sub Dean(Research) on Sept 1, 2021, Dean(Research) on July 1, 2022 at PGIMER and superannuated on August 31, 2022 after serving at PGIMER for 42 years.

Dr Ashima Goyal did his MDS (Pedodontics & Preventive Dentistry) from PGIMER in the year 1984. She has promoted as Professor and is serving as Head of Department since Sept 1, 2022.

OPD
The department has divided into six super-specialties  in terms of clinical works. All the units are directly administrated by the Head, Oral Health Sciences Centre. Followings are the six units:
1.    Conservative & Endodontics
2.    Oral Surgery
3.    Orthodontics
4.    Pedodontics
5.    Periodontics
6.    Prosthodontics

All the units in the Department run their OPDs for new patients daily except Sundays and institute OPD holidays. The old patients are attended by the respective doctors through appointments. Registration timings for new patients are as follows:

Monday to Friday  :  8:30 am – 11:00 am
Saturday               :  8:30 am – 10:30 am

The House Surgeons, Junior Residents, Senior Residents and Consultants of the department are part of an emergency team, which is available on call 24x7, and is on weekly rotational basis to manage the pediatric/adult emergency patients that report to the PGI Emergency, Advanced Trauma Centre and Oral Health Sciences Center of the institute. If there is any dental related emergency, patients can take First Aid/Medical advise by dialing  the Dental Trauma Helpline number +91-7087008717 which is available 24x7 hours. This helpline is only used for patients suffering from emergency facial injuries or emergency dental problems.
