In Patients Services The Nehru hospital provides tertiary care to the patients, who come not only from the neighboring states but also from far off states like West Bengal and Bihar. In the last five decades, the Institute has grown from an initial bed strength of 230 to now over 1960 after adding Centres like Advanced Pediatrics Centre, Advanced Eye Centre, Advanced Cardiac Centre, Bone Marrow Transplant Centre and several new Intensive care units. In the year 2012 a total number of 71357 patients were admitted to the various wards of the hospital. There has been tremendous progress in the diagnostic facilities now available at the Institute because of the generous funding from the Government of India. The department of Radio-diagnosis has undergone a great change and is one of the well-stocked department of the country. They now have facilities for all types of diagnostic and imaging techniques including DSA, MRI and mammography. Interventional radiology has become a routine for procedures on gastrointestinal tract, kidney, Vascular diseases or other systems of the body. The departments of Neurology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology and Nuclear Medicine have laboratory facilities, which can be counted as the best in the country. The department of Immunopathology is a surveillance and diagnostic centre for AIDS and can boast of the most sophisticated laboratory in Immunopathology in the country. Nuclear Medicine facilities are available at PGI for investigating and diagnosing a number of diseases related to brain, heart, liver, spleen, thyroid, kidneys, lymphatics, etc.
The department of Biophysics conducts an intensive course on the safe use of radioisotopes to train scientists, research workers and technicians in the methodologies to protect the patients, the technical personnel and the public from the radiation hazard arising out of the use of radioisotopes. The hospital also has an intensive care unit, cardiac care unit, respiratory care unit, intensive care unit for babies and a tetanus care unit. All of these are equipped with life support equipments for providing specialised care to the very sick patients. The Microsurgical techniques help the surgeon to obtain a better view of the tiny structures and facilities are available in departments of ENT, Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery & Plastic Surgery. Facilities are available for laser treatment of various ophthalmic, ENT and Neuro-surgical disorders.
The hospital while remaining busy in providing advanced medical care to patients, has not forgotten the preventive aspect of health care. The ante-natal clinic, well baby clinic, family welfare clinic, Immunisation programme, diet clinic, child guidance clinic, etc. are some of the activities undertaken routinely in this direction. PGI is striving to deploy its talent in solving the complex health and development problems in rural areas. It is helping in devising innovative and effective programmes in health care so as to bring effective and efficient health care, which is within the reach of the masses.
A number of investigators have carried out surveys in the community to get the correct idea of the magnitude of the disease problem, such surveys have been conducted by the departments of oral health sciences, medicine, cardiology, rheumatology, ophthalmology, paediatrics and psychiatry, etc.
The new facilities added include PET, Gamma Knife Centre and 3T MRI.
